Psychologists conduct research in order to measure and describe behavior as a way to understand when,why, or how events occur. They apply their knowledge to the real-world (Gorbel, Sep. 28th). Before modern technology, Psychologists had to rely on subjective repots of people when it came to research. Self-appointed authorities relied on casual observations throughout the research process. This is not an ideal way of research because common sense depends on limited observations and could create false beliefs about human behavior. However with the increasing development of modern technology and science, psychologists no longer have to rely on subjective reports or false observations. An example of this is if a psychologist asked a subject if they have ever dreamed before. The subject said no, but now the psychologist can use an electroencephalograph test; a machine that can observe an individual’s eye movement and reveal whether the dream or not (Coon Mitterer, pg. 16). My experiences in the private and public schooling system demonstrate that the learning environment to which one is exposed directly influences the knowledge one gains and is exposed to. However, Hobson argues that in relation to knowledge, it is attached to the personwhich cannot be de-attached but which is often hidden and often made invisible(1996:32). This argument rests on the premise that some knowledge is culturally worth displaying, while other knowledge is private. Hence environment and historical factors, as well as personal judgement by a person, will result in a certain world view being publicly presented. Christie, on the other hand, believes that knowledge is embodied; it is something you do, rather than something you have. (2001:87). I would argue that knowledge is more than just doing, it is something you own. I believe this because without knowing one cannot do. The jury sided with Bob Ewell that Tom Ro binson did rape Mrs. Ewell. Society back then was racist towards African Americans which lead the jury to not believe the true innocence of Tom Robinson. Society believed that these rules needed to be maintained because they benefited society and help maintain order in the society .
